FRIDAY 15 / 7
"IN COMPANY WITH CALLIYIANNIS" Pedro Olalla
On the occasion of the cinematic portrait of painter Manolis Calliyiannis, an amateur filmmaker registers compelling life lessons and art by a wonderful man.
Shortly before his death, painter Manolis Calliyiannis agrees to allow Spaniard Pedro Olalla to shoot his film portrait, starting from Hania Crete, visiting his hometown of Mytilini and even reaching Istanbul.
"My life? It was about the challenge, the exile, the need for a decision, sacrifice, war, love, painting, the magic of painting. Now nearing 90, I have my brushes, a nice workshop and this bed … and this is enough for me. I want nothing else. "
Lucid, enthusiastic, almost like a child wanting to show his friend, places and people he loved, Calliyiannis accompanies Olalla to his favorite deserted island of Crete, to the village he grew up in Mytilini, to visits to friends who are still alive.

Olalla follows him, describing the tour with a voice over so meretricious that eventually it seems relaxed, as if someone describes what he sees instantly in front of him, trying to decipher the sounds and silences of the hero.
The combination of the Calliyiannis’ confessions to Olalla’s narration is explosive, moving, vibrant, soaked with the power of amateur videos between friends. In this video we experience the paintings of artist, seas sailor, airman of the heavens, and everything Manolis Calliyiannis was when he left this life in July 2010, leaving us this portrait as a last legacy, disarming and human in every sense of the word.
